2014 National Donor Sabbath Nov. 14 – 16

2014 National Donor SabbathThis week marks the beginning of the 2014 National Donor Sabbath. National Donor Sabbath is an annual celebration of the lifesaving gift of organ, eye and tissue donation. This three day period, from November 14th through the 16th, is a time for donor organizations to get together with a wide variety of faith communities to spread the word about organ, eye and tissue donation.

This partnership between donor organizations and faith organizations is extremely important because all major religions support organ, eye and tissue donation as a final act of kindness and generosity that a person can give to their fellow human. A person’s faith plays a significant role in their decision to become an organ and tissue donor. The goal of the National Donor Sabbath is for people to become inspired by their own faith beliefs to become organ, eye and tissue donors so that one day, they may be able to provide the gift of life to someone in need. It is a time when faith communities share inspiring donation stories and congregations about the gift of life.

2014 National Donor Sabbath

What most people do not know is that on average, a single tissue donor can save or enhance the lives of up to 50 people. There are more than 1 million tissue transplants performed each year, and that need for tissue has been steadily rising.  Nearly 43% of the U.S. adult population is currently registered as organ, eye and tissue donors. Hopefully this year, thanks to National Donor Sabbath, we can see the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors reach to new heights!
